Telkom Mobile - Out of Bundle when connected to MTN network

I'm on the 10GB + 10GB Telkom contract which I originally used at home and it worked fine since I had Telkom mobile coverage there, but have since done a SIM swop and am now using the SIM in my iPad.

Strangely, when I am in places where there is no Telkom coverage, the device roams on the MTN network (as expected) but for some reason it comes up with the error that I have used up my bundle (out of bundle notification page comes up in Safari and Chrome browser) even though the Telkom Mobile portal reflects that I still have 9.9GB of my bundle available. Whenever there is Telkom mobile network coverage I am able to use my 3G data again. Is this "normal" in that the 10GB promo users are restricted from roaming on the MTN network, or is something wrong elsewhere?
