Telkom LTE and Gaming Performance

To demonstrate the gaming experience with Telkom Mobile LTE, I've recorder this short clip of Battlefield 1 with the network performance overlay enabled:

This is a representative example of the latency performance between approximately 18:00-22:00 on almost every weekday, sometimes going on until as late as 00:00, which is coincidentally the only times during the day that I am actually able to spend time on gaming.

As the clip shows, the latency averages around 450 ms - compared to around 210 ms during daytime - which is completely unplayable and characteristic of garbage service, whereas the 200 ms range is manageble, as most South Africans that play on European servers would probably agree. Also note this isn't exclusive to BF1, the same issues are present in BF3/4, WoW, Secret World; the latency becomes garbage as does the throughput of the connection. Local latency at the specified times are in the range of 180-250 ms, which is atrocious for servers that are less than 30 km from my home.

LTE uncapped early cancellation

Hi there,

Is there a way to cancel my LTE uncapped before the end of the contract? I'm willing to pay a reasonable early cancellation fee.

My connection is just all over the place, it is super fast one moment and dead slow the next and the nr of bars just don't even make a difference. The whole point was to stream video's which I can't do as the connection usually sucks in prime time. Been trying for 5 minutes to post this as the page keeps timing out, it is dreadfull and I'm tired of it.

I'm based in the Upper Highway area in Durban and suddenly for the last two weeks have has absolutely shocking speeds (<2mbs) which is strange because since inception in Feb this year I normally and consistantly operate between 40 and 60 mbs.

I've logged numerous calls and have eventually been advised that a techie is on his way today.

In absolute desperation I switched from my external to my paddles on Saturday and suddenly noticed that my router had connected to a different tower and I hit 20 mbs. Since then I've been checking my tower ID periodically and have noted that my router hops from one tower to another. In the last 2 hours it had connected to 4 different towers based on the cell ID in the router settings.

Any idea whether I can force the router to connect to the one tower that gives me the best performance? Reconnecting the external just connects me to my original tower which is useless at the moment.

Telkom Uncapped AUP - just arrived

So I just got my email with updated "Telkom AUP" for broadband uncapped consumers.

It says:
"The good news is that Telkom recently revised its AUP for Uncapped LTE. LTE Uncapped customers now receive 300GB of full speed data per month. "

Clearly, someone at Telkom did not go to Google, i know its hard but type "define uncapped"..

I am getting mixed responses from telkom help regarding international roaming. The call center says it is not possible while Twitter support says it is. Has anyone managed to get it activated?

Telkom LTE being throttled

Hi All,

I have signed up for a 100GB LTE(Telkom). I avg 15Mbps-25Mbps on non peak times. My problem is 7pm-11pm. More than often I get throttled to 1Mbps-4Mbps. This happens about 5 out of 7 days. I feel that Telkom is misleading customers as with a cap account they are throttling my connection due to congestion. I can get ADSL up to 10Mbps. I was told by a sales adviser that LTE will give upto 90Mbps (assumed real world of about 30Mbps) and Telkom convinced me to move from ADSL to LTE. My problem is that I only use the internet on peak hours. So I am paying a very expensive price for basically a 4MB line. So my question is, can I cancel my 2 year contract due to tower congestion? I had a Telkom technician at my house and said all is fine and signal is good. They have agreed that this can be due to congestion.

OH and I have full signal.

Hi

With regards to Telkom's once off bundles that last for a year. The 50GB and 100GB.

Is data transfer supported with these bundles? The tcs of data transfer says that any once off data bundle may be transfered (or part thereof).

Has anyone tried or is aware of it being supported?

Telkom LTE-A - Increased data usage

We recently signed up for Telkom's LTE-A package - R699/m - 50G data. Apart from the fact that we have been struggling with the Huawei E5186 - mainly instability with WIFI, printers on the network etc, our main concern is this: We previously had an Afrihost package that gave us 50G per month as well, via ADSL. Not once did we use our monthly bundle - ever! This, despite downloads, Netflix etc. With this new package, we are ploughing through our bundle in two weeks. WE HAVE NOT CHANGED OUR BROWSING BEHAVIOR! In fact, given the rate of burning through our bandwidth, we have cut down and limited ourselves, yet we have 4G left for the month. Any ideas?

Huawei B315 + wireless repeater

Hi,
I have setup my B315, all is good & I'd like to extend the wireless range. I have another old router that can act in "Wireless Repeater" mode so I figured I'd use that. When I setup the 2nd router in repeater mode I need to enter the mac address of the B315, all quite straightforward.
The problem comes when I look at the B315 as I see no option to make this a "base-station" (this mode is apparently needed to allow repeating) and then I would enter the mac address of router 2 in there but there are no options for this.

Has anyone used a repeater with a B315?

Telkom LTE RICA - Bank statements

I popped round to the local Telkom Direct shop in the hopes to sign up for the 100GB LTE package as my DSL is currently down and I honestly have no idea if/when it will be repaired, plus It maxes out at 4mb on a good day.
I assumed they would need the standard documents for RICA, proof of residents and an ID book or passport. I clearly assumed wrong as the lady asked for three months bank statements... I thought this was odd and I challenged the requirement as I have been a solid subscriber to Telkom for ages and clearly this is not a RICA requirement. The lady said that this branch in the mall is mostly a mobile branch and I should go to a Telkom direct shop. So I mozied on off to a Telkom Direct shop and they had the same requirement? bank statements for RICA!. WTF.

This has kind of soured the idea of Telkom LTE, Cell-C is about the same price so might make that jump, or try a local WISP.

Problematic 3G tower

Hi

Where and how do I report a problematic Telkom tower to? :confused:

The symptoms include (but are not limited to) :

- Full signal, but no throughput
- SIM takes long to register
- Sometimes there is throughput, but it is very, very slow (almost useless).
- Emails and web browsing does not work. Neither is there connectivity to the iStore.
- Android and iOS devices are affected.

I have tried different DNS servers, and another Telkom prepaid SIM card as well, but the conditions persists. Taking the SIM's in question to a different location (work) all works 100% without any configuration changes at all.

Telkom LTE download speed slower than 3G

On Sunday, I finally upgraded from a Huawei 3G USB modem (on the Internet Promo5 10GB+10GB data package) to the Huawei B315s-936 LTE router (with the 50GB+50GB data package) at the local Telkom Mobile outlet.

Expecting lightning fast access speeds - as I had checked first if I was in fact in an area covered by LTE - I connected the B315 Router to my desktop PC with the supplied LAN cable, and ran Speedtest to see how much faster LTE was, compared to 3G.

Much to my chagrin and surprise, the LTE download connection speed is actually SLOWER than the LTE upload speed!

The network settings were set to 3G only and then LTE only, to do comparative back-to-back Speedtest diagnostics. I had both external antennas inserted and set to Auto.

Here are my results - done this morning:

1. 3G network only setting - Ping: 22 ms / Download speed: 4.37 Mb/s / Upload speed: 1.66 Mb/s

The second LTE Speedtest gave me virtually identical download and upload speeds - as seen above.

What can the issue be - is it simply a faulty LTE router - or just LTE base station congestion causing the dramatically degraded LTE download speeds, as compared to 3G?

Slow 3G/LTE speeds in Hartbeespoort

Anyone else experiencing slow speeds in the Hartbeespoort area?
I'm getting low 3G speeds (2mbps if I'm lucky) and even worse LTE speeds (1mbps). This is anytime during the day.
The upload speeds seem OK-ish though.

Guys it seems that people are struggling to cancel LTE contracts.
Would I be able to buy out of it? What is the procedure?
I am quite happy to go in store and do this but unsure how successful I will be.
